The device itself is called Ulthera, and the procedure Ultherapy. Apart from lifting the neck non-surgically, Ultherapy can be used to lift the upper eyelids, jowls, and mid to lower face. It is a non- surgical method of face lifting in patients with mild to moderate laxity and good collagen. However in certain patients with moderate to severe skin laxity, Ultherapy can be performed by a Plastic Surgeon or Dermatologist to deliver extra energy for collagen and SMAS remodeling. It works differently than Thermage by using ultrasound energy known as HIFU or High Intensity Focus Ultrasound that reaches the SMAS -the muscular sheath that loosens as we age. Ultherapy is better than Thermage as it delivers its energy with more precision, depth and heat which radio frequency can’t do. The built in Ultrasound enables me to visualize depth, and to deliver energy up to 4.5 mm deep into the skin. This is not a laser device, so the upper layers of the skin are kept intact and like Thermage, Ultherapy is a now downtime procedure. Is ultrasound truly better than radio frequency? In short yes. The majority of patients will respond to Ultherapy more so than Thermage, however in some patients, especially Asian patients, Themage is still an excellent treatment. The reason why some races respond better is that collagen contraction is exaggerated in Ethnic skin. Ultherapy doesn’t replace a facelift. It physically cannot do what a facelift can, rather it’s a stop gap. Ultherapy cannot change your anatomy either. Some people are just made with a very short jawline, where the chin seems connected to the neck. Ultherapy will not address this issue in a meaningful way. This is when fillers can reshape the chin and jawline – to a certain degree. Results take time, and sometimes aren’t visible for a full six months. Most patients will notice a difference by the 3 months mark. If you’re tempted by Ultherapy, remember to ask your doctor what type of results you can reasonably expect and if you’re the right patient type. I combine surgical and non-surgical methods including Botox, Juvederm Fillers, lasers and energy devices including Ultherapy, Infini RF and yes, even the newest Thermage in exceptional cases to deliver skin rejuvenation and tightening. Remember, it is often not the device but the method that gives the best results. Thanks for watching, and remember to subscribe – one new video every Saturday morning.
